The November Update
Hello, friends of Easy Does it,
In October, the funding for our wheelchair repair work in The City of Oakland was completely spent, and we are currently not able to serve Oakland Residents that require regular maintenance on their power chairs. But this does not mean that we have given up on serving Oakland Residents in the future.
Over the past few years, Easy Does It has made an effort to expand upon the number of communities in which we are funded to provide wheelchair repair services. Although we were able to do a great deal of good for Oakland clients, the additional case volume has put an immense amount of pressure on our team and the transportation they rely on to do their jobs. On top of this, since the pandemic, our offices are not sufficient to allow us to safely welcome clients into our repair shop, therefore we are required to provide wheelchair repair services at the clients’ home, which puts miles on our fleet and also puts our Wheelchair Repair Team at greater health exposure risk.
If we are to realize our dream of EDI serving a few additional communities, we need to focus on improvements to how we conduct our wheelchair repair services before taking on any additional wheelchair repair work.
So, What’s Next?
Over the following year, we will be taking on a series of internal projects that will modernize our operations and improve the quality of the services we can provide. These changes will empower our team to provide better care for more individuals as well as identifying a safe space in Oakland for our repair team to work with all of our clients and finally, identifying funding to continue our wheelchair repair work in Oakland.
A Safe Location for Oakland Wheelchair Repair Workshops
Since the start of the Pandemic, Easy Does It has opted to send our Repair Team directly to our client’s home, instead of having clients come to our repair shop. Although this was essential a few years ago, currently, it is putting our Repair team’s health and safety at risk when they go into client's homes. When they are responding to Oakland service calls, they are also putting additional miles on our wheelchair repair van that we cannot afford to replace.
A New Wheelchair Repair Shop that is Open to the Public
Covid-19 may still be a thing, but that does not mean we cannot safely welcome clients into our Repair Shop for preventative maintenance. Our office space on Adeline Street is ill-equipped to welcome clients, as we have crammed our admin team, repair team, and a portion of our parts collection into a very small storefront building.
We are still a year out from even being able to move to a larger building, but a better equipped repair shop in a safe location, with private/quiet spaces for the rest of our team to work within the office, we couldn’t be more excited to build out this new space for our clients and team.
Reimagining our Technology Choices
Like every Business in 2025, Easy Does it Emergency Services relies on a variety of cloud-based services to allow our business to function. Our team relies on these systems to do their jobs, but they are struggling to keep up with all the new work we have taken on. We are also unable to offer features our clients have asked for repeatedly over the years, like online booking and bill payment.
We have identified new software solutions that will empower us to drastically improve how our team can use technology to provide better experiences for our clients. But like a new office, implementing a brand-new database takes time, and we are very much looking forward to sharing the result with you.
