July Heat Advisory

Emergency Update

July 2, 2024

The National Weather Service has declared an Excessive Heat Warning including Berkeley from 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 2 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 6. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s on Tuesday and Wednesday and the mid 80s the rest of the week.

Take steps today to make sure your household, neighbors, and loved ones stay safe and comfortable tomorrow.

  1. Prepare to stay cool in your home: Gather supplies to stay cool, like fans and ice. Watch this video about how to keep your house cool in the summer without air conditioning.
  2. Keep your body cool: Remember, in hot temperatures, sweating is your body's way of cooling down. But this means you're losing water, so staying well-hydrated is crucial. Prepare plenty of ice and cold water to drink.
  3. Plan where to go if your home gets too hot: City libraries and senior centers will be open during normal operating hours (closed Thursday, July 4) if you need a safe, cool place to escape the heat. These sites have air conditioning:
  4. Buddy up with your friends, family, and neighbors: Make a plan to check on the vulnerable people in your network at least twice daily through Saturday. Elders, children, people with certain medical conditions, and people who live alone can be very vulnerable to heat.
